ASSITEJ International June Update

This June, we have an update from President of ASSITEJ International, Sue Giles:

In April, I had the joy of an incredible adventure with the Wanderlust festival project starting in Mongolia. Organised by ASSITEJ Mongolia and involving ASSITEJ Centres from Indonesia and Nepal, this festival had an international touring team from 14 different countries, reaching 36,700 children across 9 days in the Bulgan province – most of whom have never seen theatre before. It was a remarkable example of what can happen with some initial funding from ASSITEJ International and a lot of local passion and support.

The next iteration of the Wanderlust project is in Indonesia in Kalimantan in August and then next year in February in Nepal. There was a gathering of emerging artists in Mongolia, including one from Australia, and new work for children created by this group.  Friendships started here and continue with collaborations in other countries.

At the same time, ASSITEJ International has funded another three-centre project in Africa, with ASSITEJ Senegal – starting this month – then ASSITEJ Burkina Faso and ASSITEJ Côte d’Ivoire. Getting involved in this international family is immensely rewarding and continuously offers eye-opening experiences as well as a lot of hope.
