Canberra Circus Festival: Trainer Bursary EOIs OPEN

TNA is pleased to be able to support a circus trainer with diverse lived experience to attend the Canberra Circus Festival for five days of professional development.

The bursary will cover a ‘Circus Trainer’ ticket (incl. three-day Circus Trainer Development Program, camping ticket (BYO gear), meals and tickets to select Big Top shows). It will also go towards covering flights/travel costs to get to and from the festival.

This bursary is intended to support a trainer who is facing significant barriers of access & equity. People from TNA’s target communities will be prioritised: First Peoples, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse people, People of Colour, Deaf and disabled people, marginalised genders and those based regionally.

About the Circus Trainer Development Program

The Trainer Training program features: 4 x 2-hour theory workshops (details below), plus practical trainer training skills sessions delivered by master trainers, including guest trainers from our good friends at NICA!

Topics covered:

  • Foundations of developmental theory. Focusing on physical and cognitive development; other holistic areas such as Culture, Social, and Emotional development.
  • Sensory development and the sensory lens. How it can help direct class structure and minimise difficult behaviours in the group. How it can be utilised to optimise learning within Circus.
  • Behaviour support and management. Working through the ABC framework of Behaviour Change and Coping Strategies. A practical guide to behavioural intervention and cultural development within a circus group.
  • Pending time, may also include supporting Mastery of Art through coaching/parenting styles. Focusing on Authoritative leadership and fostering independence.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I have already booked and paid for my ticket and/or flights, can I still apply?
Yes – the bursary can be used to reimburse you for expenses already incurred.

Do I get to choose whether I camp or stay in the dorms?
Dorm accommodation is already booked out, so this bursary will only include a camping ticket.

Can I choose to make my own arrangements for food and accommodation?
Sure. The bursary will cover exact flight or travel costs, plus $885 to cover your festival ticket, meals and accommodation (camping or otherwise). You will need to provide receipts for your ticket and travel/flight costs, but you may choose to book a “Training Only” ticket and use the remainder of the bursary to go towards a different accommodation option.

I’m going with my friend – can we apply together and split it between us?
No, this bursary is only for one person.

I’m facing other barriers, can I spend the money on those things instead?
This bursary is intended to cover the specific costs mentioned above. If you are facing other barriers, please get in touch with us and we can help you investigate additional avenues for support.
