CaPT Sector Bulletin July 2026

Hello CaPT friends!

It’s been a while—we hope you’re keeping warm where you are. There’s been a few things happening at TNA, so this update focuses on some of the projects we’ve been working on in the past few months, for CaPT and more broadly in the sector. We’re refreshing our CaPT Advisory, and are looking for people to join and share their expertise, advocacy and energy with us. EOIs close Friday, 7 August. There have been a number of submissions to the National Cultural Policy that advocates for the CaPT sector and you can read some of the submissions below. Thank you again for your energy and work in what continues to be a fraught and precarious time; good luck to those going to Edinburgh Fringe, and we hope to hear, see, and reconnect with you soon.

Warmly,
The TNA team

7 August – TNA CaPT Advisory EOIs
TNA is refreshing our CaPT Advisory for 2026-27. The Advisory maintains strong engagement and information exchange between TNA and the CaPT sector, advises TNA on sector issues and opportunities, and informs the development of future CaPT advocacy activities. There will be two meetings in 2026, and four in 2027. Non-salaried independent advisory members are paid an annual honorarium.

TNA Indie Survey 2026
TNA is calling out for responses to our Indie Survey. We want to hear from independent creatives from the CaPT sector about your working trends and fees. This fifth edition will build on longitudinal data collected since 2018. Your responses provide essential data on working trends that assist TNA’s ongoing advocacy and provide a fee benchmark for independent creatives to use when quoting for freelance work.

National Cultural Policy Submissions
TNA made a submission to the National Cultural Policy consultation process on behalf of our members. In recommendation 10 on touring, we highlighted that CaPT must be named as a priority artform given the CaPT sector’s exceptional export strength and disproportionately high touring costs. Read other CaPT sector submissions on the Office for the Arts page using the search function. These include submissions from Mitch Jones, World Circus Federation, Women’s Circus, Gravity and Other Myths and Vulcana Circus.

Victorian Performing Arts Forum (VPAF)
TNA hosted VPAF on 29 May at Trades Hall in Carlton, attended by 122 across the sector. The focus of the forum was on collective advocacy. Mitch Jones of Oozing Future ran a workshop on advocacy for indies! We published a ‘Mapping Advocacy’ resource from the day on our website.

Common Statement for a Safer and more Responsible Circus and Outdoor Arts Sector
Circostrada, circusnext, FEDEC AND IN SITU, reaffirm their collective commitment to a safer and more responsible sector. There are a list of resources including ‘Ethical Commitments’, ‘Spotting in Circus Training: Consent, Safety and Learning’, and ‘Spark Research Lab on Fair practices and Equitable Working Conditions’.

Spin Circus Festival 2027
Spin Circus has announced the dates for Spinfest next year: 7–11 January 2027. Tickets will be on sale soon

Circus Centre Melbourne Co-Working Spaces
New co-working spaces for producers and arts workers are available at Circus Centre Melbourne. It includes desks, whiteboards, breakout spaces, and meeting rooms. Tiered cost: $300 for six months, $500 for the year, or $10 for a day.

RTO Hand to Hand Academy now run by Warehouse Circus
Warehouse Circus now runs the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) Hand to Hand Academy. They offer a vocational course with a circus stream and rigging course.

TNA’s next CaPT bulletin will be distributed in mid-September this year. If you have CaPT items you’d like to share in the bulletin or monthly e-news, email content@tna.org.au
