Circus Insurance Deep Dive #2: Advocating for Better Insurance

TNA is excited to offer a two-part resource aimed at helping CaPT artists and organisations navigate challenges of the current insurance market. This series includes tools and information to help you understand insurance and secure the right coverage for your needs.

Understanding the Current Insurance Landscape

To effectively advocate for change it is necessary to consider big picture trends and perspectives of other stakeholders. For a general overview of the insurance landscape, this article from the Institute of Community Directors Australia predicts the most pressing insurance issues for not-for-profits in 2025.

TNA has also summarised research from the Insurance Council of Australia about the commercial insurance market and challenges facing small businesses in Australia, highlighting insights and recommendations that are relevant to the arts.

Your Advocacy

As an individual insurance customer there are limited ways you can influence the decisions of underwriters and insurers. The most effective thing you can do is use your own data and records to help your broker build a compelling case that you are rigorous and effective in managing risk. (Check out Deep Dive #1 for more on risk management and documentation.)

Many CaPT riggers and companies have been encountering newly introduced height limits in liability insurance for circus rigging. TNA has compiled this straightforward factsheet to support your conversations with brokers about rigging coverage over 11m, and help them advocate to insurers on your behalf.

Sector Advocacy

TNA is currently working with brokers towards insurance solutions that provide all the coverage the CaPT sector needs. The easiest action you can take right now is to send your policy documents to TNA (email admin@tna.org.au), so we are well-armed to advise them and negotiate for the coverage you need. Anything you share with TNA will remain confidential, and we will not share it with anyone other than the brokers we are working with.

Working collaboratively has already yielded positive outcomes for many CaPT companies, through sharing information and opportunities. Following the survey many of you contributed to last year, TNA has created an overview for insurers and brokers to help them understand the CaPT sector. We encourage you to use this data to enhance your own advocacy.

TNA’s Advocacy

TNA is undertaking ongoing advocacy work around targeted policies that may alleviate insurance challenges in other ways. This includes advocating for funding obligations for insurance coverage to match market availability, as well as investigating the potential impact for our sector of reduced state duties and legislated liability caps.

This overview summarises what we’ve heard from our members about their insurance needs and coverage gaps. If you have insurance needs that aren’t covered in this overview, please feel free to get in touch and let us know.
