LeaderShift 2023 Cohort
We are very excited to announce the 11 leaders from diverse backgrounds that will be taking part in LeaderShift. The cohort will meet monthly with facilitator Veronica Pardo and receive support for professional development, while their organisations’ CEOs take part in the Culturally Safe Leadership Program. LeaderShift is a part of TNA’s commitment to diversifying performing arts leadership and succession planning in our Equity Action Plan.

NATIONAL STUFF

National Cultural Policy
The federal government’s $300m national cultural policy, Revive, was launched on Monday. Under Revive, Australia Council for the Arts will be rebranded as Creative Australia, with four new bodies sitting under it: a First Nations-led body, Music Australia, Writers Australia, and the Centre for Arts and Entertainment Workplaces. Arts Hub will explore the ramifications and details of Revive in further articles over the coming days, and TNA will be sending out a summary bulletin to members in the coming week.

A Climate For Art (ACFA) Divestment Call Outs
ACFA is a divestment campaign creating collective action on climate in the arts. They’re looking for orgs interested in committing to steering away their funding from fossil fuel-lending banks, default superannuation and power companies, and sharing this through a timeline. Join a collective of peer orgs to transparently share resources and centre a cultural response to the climate crisis. Get in touch at hello@aclimateforart.com. 

6 Feb – Asialink Leaders Arts Fellowship
Program for leaders in the Arts and Creative Industries with abilities and ambitions related to Asia engagement. Asialink will provide the full program fee of $11,300, excluding travel and accommodation related to program attendance.

8 Feb – Haymarket Creative EOI (NSW)
A range of office and creative development spaces within the UTS Campus in Haymarket are available for eligible arts and cultural orgs for a 3 year-and-4-month period from early 2023 to June 2026.

9 Fen – Galang Residency
12-week fully subsidised residency in Paris, hosted by the Cité internationale des arts for two Australian-based First Nations artists. The residency covers return flights from Sydney to Paris, accommodation and per diems for food and travel within Paris.

16 Feb – Australian Network of Art & Technology (ANAT): Synapse Residency
16 weeks full-time residency for research collaborations between artists and scientists. ANAT provides $4,400 per month and contributions towards project material costs, accommodation expenses and return travel to the residency if required. A joint application must be submitted.

16 Feb – Playlab Theatre Playwright Incubator (QLD)
For emerging Queensland playwrights to create the first draft of their new play. Participants will be guided by award-winning playwright Kathryn Marquet through a range of activities and receive one-on-one dramaturgical feedback.

16 Feb – Women of Colour in Leadership Burnout Prevention Workshop
Online workshop for women of colour in leadership that introduces a different way of understanding burnout, pathways for recovery and ultimately prevention. $96.

19 Feb – Disability Leadership Program
The Australian Institute of Company Directors is offering full-fee scholarships for leaders with disability to undertake either the Company Directors Course, Foundations of Directorship Program or Governance Foundations for Not-for-Profit Directors.

19 Feb – IN | SITE Program Destabilise (QLD)
The artist run initiative invites project proposals for their program, Destabilise. Successful projects receive $2,500, access to space for development and presentation, technical support and more.

20 Feb–14 March – The Mill’s Masterclasses (SA)
A series of masterclasses run in partnership with Metro Arts, Adelaide Festival and Adelaide Fringe. On 20 Feb: Poetry and Spoken Word with Huda Fadlelmawla; Devising Physical Theatre with Will Tredinnick; on 3 March: Nailing a Spoken Story with Emma Beech; and on 14 March: Freestyle to Choreography with Feras Shaheen. $30 per class.

28 Feb – Arts Activities Funding (ACT)
$5k–$50k for Canberra artists, groups and orgs to undertake arts activities including creating new work, professional or skills development, mentoring, residencies, community arts and cultural development/engagement. $5k grants for smaller projects are open all year round.

6 March – HotHouse Theatre’s Greenhouse National Artist Residency (Albury Wodonga)
Up to two weeks creative development. In-kind accommodation and studio access for co-funded residencies, with an additional $1,200–$2,000 stipends provided for funded residencies.

7 March – AusCo’s Arts Projects for Individuals and Groups 
$10,000–$50,000 grants for activities that deliver benefits to the arts sector and wider public, including national and international audiences and communities.

10 March: APAM Gathering Profile EOIs at RISING 
Profiles are 2-5 min pitch presentations by AU and NZ performing artists, collectives and orgs, delivered to registered participants of the APAM Gathering at RISING in June 2023. EOIs are open for performance projects until 10 March. 

APAX Dates 2023
This year’s Australian Performing Arts Exchange will be in Cairns/Gimuy from 28 Aug–1 Sept. Market applications open mid-March, and registrations open in May.

Watch: Peer 4 Peer Vidcast with Heidi Everett
A new series, with the first episode featuring artist and Schizy Inc’s Heidi Everett, who speaks about mental health through the ‘social model’ of disability, including reframing complex trauma through the arts, empowerment and healing. 35 minutes.

Patternmakers Audience Trends for 2023
According to the Patternmakers, 84% of audiences will be attracted to events in 2023 that they used to attend before the pandemic. Read the report on the six audience trends for 2023.

VICTORIAN STUFF

5 Feb – La Mama x Australian Plays Transform’s Pathways 
A series of 15 nuts-and-bolts weekly sessions on the craft of playwriting and contemporary theatre creation for emerging and early mid-career theatre artists, theatre-makers and playwrights. Participants will receive up to 18 hours of dramaturgy or mentoring to develop their project.

6 Feb – Creators/Directors for Inclusive Workshop EOIs
Fusion Theatre is looking for new Creatives with theatre directing/creating experience to lead and collaborate with the Ensemble in a series of theatre workshops in Dandenong. Creatives will be paid $50-60 per hour, dependent on experience.

6 Feb – Present at Showcase Victoria 2023 EOIs
This year’s arts market is on 9–10 May. Selected artists and producers receive an online performance profile on Showcase Victoria’s website, the opportunity to present an excerpt of their production or pitch their show to attendees.

12 Feb – Geelong Arts Centre’s Creative Engine Residency
For performing artists to collaborate and trial ideas in a fully catered and accommodated residence outside of Geelong. Project development is supported by one-on-one sessions and workshops. Facilitated by the creator of the residency model, Performing Lines’ Annette Downs.

15 Feb – ‘Somethings from Nothings’ Online Creative Workshops
A six-month, artist-led, online workshop series for all creatives. Co-facilitated by Sylvie Meltzer and Melinda Hetzel. Monthly practice-sharing evenings. From $60.

17 & 19 Feb – Darebin Participants for ‘Exquisite Bias’ as part of FUSE Festival
Seeking participants aged 30-60 years old with a connection to Darebin for a collaborative, audio-visual portraiture project exploring unconscious racial bias and cultural identity in contemporary Australia. Takes 10min; participants receive a digital copy of their portrait.

20 Feb – Footscray Community Arts RESIDENCE
Up to 9–12 months free space for artists to experiment with practice, create innovative arts projects, and conduct research.

22 Feb – Creators Fund
$20,000–$50,000 for up to six months for individuals and groups/collectives to undertake intensive creative research and development of new ideas/concepts, and practice-based experimentation. Applications for the First Peoples and General stream close 22 Feb, the Deaf and Disabled stream close 1 March.

22 Feb – Arts Access Victoria’s The Gathering
The Gathering is AAV’s monthly online forum for Deaf and Disabled artists and industry guests led by CEO, Caroline Bowditch. The first Gathering for 2023 will be held this month.

Casting Call for Musical Trailer (Paid)
Seeking 8 performers of varied ages and looks for a 2-minute trailer. The trailer is for a stylised musical satire set in the early 1960s in Rome. $300 for a one-day shoot in mid/late Feb. For more information contact Alfredo Malabello at amalabello@icloud.com or 0413 898 225.

Info on Child Abuse Insurance
TNA is aware that child abuse insurance is an issue on the radar for many organisations, especially in VIC as it is a requirement of state government funding used to deliver services for children. We have compiled an info document that organisations might find useful.

5 Feb – 2023 PYT Fairfield Ensemble EOIs
For emerging artists aged 18–28 to be a part of the 2023 Ensemble Program, which includes workshops on topics such writing, performing and creating original work for the stage, mentorships, and free access to theatre spaces.

6 Feb – HotHouse Theatre’s Industry Co:Lab (Albury Wodonga)
A pre-professional training program for emerging artists 16–24 primarily in theatre. All artists will develop performance skills, however an interest in making theatre is essential.

3 March – Carclew’s Project and Development Grants
$3,000 grants for skills development and artistic career building purposes, or up to $10,000 for the development and/or presentation of new or existing work. Open to individuals and groups up to 26 years, or up to 30 years for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicants.

ATYP’s Youth Advisory Body
Open to 13–26-year-olds interested in learning how Australia’s national youth theatre selects plays, identifies projects, and works with playwrights to develop scripts. Meetings are online and in-person between March and December.

15–17 Feb – Guest Workshop Bounce Juggling (WA)
Circus WA has a 2-day course for experienced and aspiring bounce jugglers at the Freo Big Top, run by Emily Loe from Wildhouse Circus. $50.

13–17 April – Spin Circus Festival 
3 full days of workshops, shows, skills and community in Camp Cooriemungle, VIC. Tiered pricing, a full adult ticket costs $375.

17–23 April – Canberra Circus Festival 2023
The Youth Circus Program is five days of skills training and performance development masterclasses for 12–24-year-olds; the Trainer Training Program features four 2-hour theory workshops. • Anna Reece has been announced as Perth Festival’s next Artistic Director, succeeding current Artistic Director Iain Grandage after he delivers his fifth and final Festival program in 2024.
