TNA STUFF

ANZSCO Review Update
The ABS has been undertaking a comprehensive review of ANZSCO. (ANZSCO is the official list of occupations in Australia.) Last month they published preliminary proposed occupation changes following a consultation process. While many of the sector’s recommendations do not appear to have been taken on, we were pleased to note a recommendation from TNA’s submission that has been adopted. “Circus Performer or Trainer” is being proposed as a new occupation. This will help increase visibility and support for CaPT workers.

9 August – TNA Indie Survey (Final Call for Responses)
Last call for independent artists and creatives in the performing arts to fill out a survey about working trends and fees. We want more responses from TAS indies and First Nations indies. This edition will build on longitudinal data collected in 2018, 2020 and 2022. It will help TNA’s ongoing advocacy and helps indies with fee benchmarking. It will be available as a public report in the coming months for everyone to use.

11 August – Directors in TYA International Exchange EOIs (Deadline extended)
A fantastic opportunity for one Australian artist who creates work for young audiences to attend the biennial gathering in Germany in 2025. Australians have been going to this exchange since the 80s. Last year TNA supported Rita Pryce to attend.

1 October – TNA Northern Rivers Dance & Physical Theatre Gathering 
Save the date! TNA and Arts Northern Rivers (ANR) are hosting a gathering. It is for the Dance & Physical Theatre sector in the NSW Northern Rivers region. 1 October, 1:30pm – 4:00pm, Drill Hall Theatre, Mullumbimby. 


NATIONAL STUFF

7 August – Business Connect: The Art of Law
Free online workshop to help artists understand basic legal essentials. It will cover copyright, intellectual property, contracts and confidentiality. Learn where to go for free help and resources.

7 August – State Cultural Treasures Awards (WA)
Nominate a senior artist (over 60 years of age) that has made outstanding lifelong contributions to their art form and the community. 

8 August – Auspicious Arts Grant Writing Workshop
Free online grant writing workshop. It will centre around the Creative Australia projects grant round closing 3 September. 5.30pm – 7pm.

8 August – Funding Fundamentals with Creative Plus Business (NSW Central Coast)
Free workshop on how to write, manage and maintain funding. Covers different kinds of funding, from grants to procurement and more. 10am – 12pm, Laycock Street Community Theatre.

11 August – Theatre Makers Program (Alice Springs)
Workshop program for emerging artists aged 18+ living in Central Australia. Runs Sundays 10am – 1pm across September and October. Performance on 9 November.

11 August – PH(R)ASE//:1 – ‘Pitch Lab’ EOIs (Northern Rivers / Gold Coast)
Three-day peer-to-peer choreographic ideas residency. Bring your vision for a new performance work, share your choreographic processes, and seed new collaborative relationships. 6 – 8 September, led by Miranda Wheen and Katina Olsen.

12 August – CAAP Playwrights Lab EOIs (NSW)
CAAP Playwrights Lab is a day-long program on 10 October. It is open to early-to-mid-career Asian Australian playwrights based in NSW. Connect with industry leaders and join a masterclass with Anchuli Felicia King. Participants receive an honorarium.

13 August – PYT’s 2024 Artist-In-Residence Applications
Supports young and emerging artists from Western Sydney to create or present original live performance. Provides $7000, space, producing, mentoring, financial support and profiling.

13 and 20 August – Arts Law Workshops hosted by Arts Access Victoria
Free online workshops presented by Arts Law. 13 August: Copyright 101 for Artists. 20 August: Understanding Arts Contracts. Join one or both at 12pm.

15 August – Creative Exchange Webinar: Working with First Peoples in the Arts
Assists people in the creative industries sector to work productively and respectfully with First Peoples. Presented by 100% Indigenous-owned law firm Terri Janke and Company. 15 Aug, 11.30am – 12.30pm AEST, Free.

16 August – Encounter Theatre ThisGen Fellowship (WA)
Immersive program of paid training, hands-on residencies, labs, and peer-to-peer connection. You will be mentored by industry producers and directors. Open to early career artists who are CaLD and/or First Nations. Fee of $5,000 per participant.

18 August – Darebin Arts Speakeasy 2025 Presentation Applications
Total package of around $50,000 of combined cash and in-kind support. Includes rehearsal space, venue to present, technical equipment, artist/company fee, marketing support etc.

19 August – 14 September – Independent Dance Exchange Australia (IDEA’24) Workshops and exchanges running across four weeks in Sydney. These will be facilitated by national and international dance artists, choreographers and companies.

19 – 23 August – APAX Program: Latest Announcements
Program for conference days now available. View current list of over 370 delegates.

25 August – Southside Festival 2025 Artist Commissions
EOIs open to present work at 10-day Frankston festival in May 2025. Up to $5,000 funding.

31 August – Sydney Creative Studios Digital Spaces Offer
Brand X is offering 50% off day and week prices to book their digital spaces. These include podcasting, editing and multi-media suites. Prices begin at $70/day for individual artists. 29 August – ActNow Community Workshop: WriteNow with Finegan Kruckemeyer (SA)
Learn about writing for theatre from the ground up. Free to attend for anyone above 18 years old. 29 August, 6.30 – 8.30pm, in-person at ActNow Theatre.

2 September – British Council: Connections Through Culture Grants
Up to 5,000 GBP to support creative collaborations between Asia-Pacific and the UK. Projects can be at any stage of development.

3 September – Creative Australia Arts Projects for Individuals and Groups 
Up to $50,000 for a range of activities and projects, both national and international.

10 September – Ian Potter Emerging Artist Grants
$15,000 for early career or emerging artists. Pursue professional development and networking opportunities in an international context.

10 September – Adelaide Fringe 2025: Fringe Fund Grants
Participant Grants ($5,000) and Australian First Nation Grants ($5,000) for creatives presenting a Fringe show. Producers, programmers and venues are also eligible if you meet the criteria.

8 October – CACWA Arts Equity Summit: Balancing the Scales on Gender Disparities
Event on gendered financial inequality in the arts. Includes presentation, keynote, panel and workshop. 1pm – 6pm, registration for indies: $70.

Arts NT Arts Grants
Now open across a range of funding programs. These include Quick Response, Creative Communities and Professional Development. Most of them are open until 31 May 2025 or until the budget runs out.

Creative Australia First Nations Board EOIs
The Minister will appoint a First Nations-led Board later this year (subject to legislation passing). Complete an EOI if you would like to be considered.

Accessible Arts Training
Lots of great workshops including ‘Disability Confidence Training’, ‘Creative Access’, ‘Creating Inclusive Workplaces’, ‘Access Rider Workshop’. Cost: $105 per session. 10% off when booking for 3 to 5 people. All online.

Terrapin is now certified carbon neutral

10 August – Force Majeure Consent and Boundaries Workshops
Workshop sharing tried and tested approaches for navigating consent, boundaries and intimacy in theatre-making. Cost: $159.

19 August – Naarm/Solo Dance Exchange 2024-26 EOIs
Long-term choreographic exchange by Lucy Guerin Inc (LGI) and EkosDance Company (EDC). It pairs a Melbourne-based choreographer and a Indonesian choreographer. You will work collaboratively in Naarm/Melbourne (Australia) and Solo/Surakarta (Indonesia). The exchange culminates in a new show for public presentation. Includes award wages, per diems, airfares, accommodation.

19 August – Melbourne Fringe Volunteers
Fringe is looking for volunteers for their festival in October. Roles include All-Rounders, Front of House Attendants, Fringe Greeters, and Access Champions. In exchange, you get free tickets, discounts and deals etc.

24 August – WHAT REMAINS: Celebrating 10 years of the Keir Choreographic Award
Speakers are Phillip Keir, Philipa Rothfield, Angela Conquet, Atlanta Eke and Becky Hilton. Event includes the book launch of ‘Competing Choreographies’. The publication maps the history, impact and implications of the Keir Choreographic Award. The book will be available for free at the event or ordered online for $30.  Free event, 5pm – 10pm, Abbotsford Convent.

26 August – Creative State Consultation
Contribute to the public consultation process for our state’s next creative industries strategy. It will guide investment for 2025-28. Complete the survey, make a submission in response to the discussion paper, or both. As part of this process, Regional Arts Victoria is facilitating sessions across the state.

31 August – Creative Industries Boards EOIs
Express your interest in joining one or more of Victoria’s creative industries boards. You will be included in a talent pool from which board appointments are selected. Includes organisations like ACMI, State Library, RISING, Geelong Arts Centre, and more.

9 September – Darebin Intercultural Centre Open Access EOIs
The Darebin Intercultural Centre is offering space, time, and $2,000 cash for you to explore your ideas about culture, identity, and intersectionality. 

13 September – BIPoC Creative Access Collective: The Artistic Intelligence Symposium 
D/deaf and D/disabled BIPoC creatives are invited to co-design Creative Access. Creative Access is an emerging ecology that melds creativity, accessibility, personal authenticity and wellness approaches. 13 October, 12pm – 2pm, Fitzroy North Library, by donation. Participants are selected through EOI process which closes 13 September.

30 September – ACT Natimuk’s Creative Lab 2024 – 2025 Program
Seed a project for showing at NatiFrinj 2025. $3,000 grant, support to build connections in Natimuk, access to space and technical support. Two open project opportunities and one for a First Nations artist/collective.

VAPAC Industry Development Initiative Update

9 August – Drama Victoria Conference: Call For Submissions (Deadline extended)
Drama Victoria wants to build stronger connections with our industry. They want to get more students into theatres, and more theatre and drama opportunities into schools. They are inviting theatre companies and artists to submit proposals for their upcoming conference in November. No registration costs to participate.

Arts NT NXT Gen ARTS Grants
$13,000 to do a work placement with an NT arts organisation. Your placement can be full-time for 3 months or part time for up to 6 months. You must be aged 18 to 25 to apply. Open from 1 August 2024 to 31 May 2025, or until the funding runs out. NT arts organisations can also apply to host.

23 August – Future of NICA Secured; Applications for 2025 Intake Open
NICA has announced an exciting new partnership with the Australian College of the Arts (Collarts). This forms an agreement that secures the future of circus arts in Australia. Applications for the 2025 intake into their tertiary Circus Arts programs are now open.

26–29 September – Melbourne Juggling Convention
Workshops and networking for jugglers. Tiered registration starting from $40, the Early Bird 4-day pass costs $140. The workshop schedule will be announced soon.

29 September – 3 October – National Circus Festival (Mullumbimby Showground)
Five-day National Training Program, followed by three-day circus festival. Workshops skill levels range from beginner to advanced. Suitable for adult professionals and youth circus participants aged 13-17 years old. 

APAC & Spinfest 2025 dates announced
There will be a pre-convention for the first time. This includes 5 extra days of training with a smaller group. Pre-convention: 3-9 Jan. APAC: 10-15 Jan. Spin Circus Festival: 16-20 Jan. More details coming soon on Spin Circus socials, with tickets on sale from September.

Ongoing – NICA’s Artist Residency Program
Free space for independent circus artists and groups to undertake creative development. Space is offered for two consecutive weeks: Mondays to Fridays, between 10am-4pm.

Ongoing – Women’s Circus: ‘Space Connect’ Program and Inclusive Ensemble 
Women’s Circus is offering free rehearsal space. They have also started an Inclusive Ensemble. Disabled circus artists interested in joining can get in touch.
