Watch APAF’s Opening Keynote on Becoming Better Ancestors
It was lovely to catch up with everyone in Meanjin and online at our Australian Performing Arts Forum. You can watch our opening keynote with Chelsea Watego, Sinsa Mansell, Rachael Maza AM, Hannah Belanszky, and moderator Michelle Tuahine, who made up a multi-generational panel of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.

TNA Leadership EOIs
The TNA Board will open Expressions of Interest for new leadership at TNA next week, closing early November. More info will be posted on the TNA website.

NATIONAL STUFF

6 Oct – Pride Foundation Australia’s Large Grants 
Orgs can apply up to $20,000 over two years. Projects should support sexuality, sex and gender diverse (LGBTQIA+) refugees and people seeking asylum.

9 Oct – Artback NT Performing Arts Development and Touring Program EOIs (NT)
The program delivers performances and workshops to audiences around Australia. EOIs are open for NT performing artists or producers with a tour-ready show.

10 Oct – Creative Australia’s Dreaming Award
$20,000 in mentoring and partnerships support for two First Nations artists aged 18–30 to create a major body of work.

10 Oct – Creative Australia’s International Exchange 
Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris offers a 3-month residency and $12,500 to develop your practice, while the Helsinki International Artist Program provides a 3-month residency and $12,500 for open-ended research and experimentation. Open to all art forms.

12 Oct – Institute of Community Director’s Dealing with Conflict Webinar
Online webinar available to all states on how to guide a board or org through conflict to minimise its impacts. $88 for members, $110 for non-members.

13 Oct – The Autumn Progress Fellowship
Online leadership course for advocates and campaigners looking to change the world through public advocacy. Program includes campaign strategy, community organising, First Nations justice. Scholarships are available for First Nations, people with disability, people of colour, people with lived experience seeking asylum and any unwaged changemakers.  

14 Oct – Schizy Inc’s Lived and Living Experience Innovation Forum
A panel of social impact leaders with lived experience, on how recovery and healing can occur beyond the medical model. In-person in Melbourne, or on Zoom – register by emailing admin@schizy.org with the subject line ‘forum23’.

16 Oct – Critical Path Responsive Residencies (NSW)
$10,000 and up to three weeks of in-kind space for NSW artists with a choreographic practice to undertake research projects without a pre-determined product outcome.

17 Oct – The Blue Room Theatre’s 600 SECONDS Applications (WA)
Create and present a 10-minute performance piece at The Blue Room Theatre’s Summer Nights, and receive a small seed fund, and support from program mentor Ofa Fotu, or STRUT Dance.

20 Oct – NT Performing Arts Awards
Peer-judged awards that recognise outstanding achievement on stage and behind the scenes in the NT community. Nominations are open to the public.

25 Oct – Freeplay Awards 2023
Submissions for the Freeplay Awards, celebrating excellence in indie games in Australia, New Zealand, and Oceania is open. There is a non-digital category that welcomes interactive live work and immersive performances.

26 Oct – Australia-Indonesia Institute Grant Round 2023–24
$15,000–$50,000 one-year funding for media, arts, and culture activity that continue people-to-people and institutional engagement and exchange between Australia and Indonesia.

6 Nov – INDance 2024 EOIs (NSW)
For independent dance makers, artists, choreographers or small orgs for dance work ready-to-go to be professionally presented by Sydney Dance Company in the Neilson Studio. Sydney Dance Company will provide the venue, associated production support and a presentation fee.

Accessible Arts Online Workshops 
In October: Creating Inclusive Workplaces, and Accessible Marketing and Communications. $99 per person.

Arts Wellbeing Collective – In-Person and Online Training Program (VIC)
The newly launched training program targets workplace wellbeing in the live performance sector. Dates are available for October–December this year. The program incorporates the previously offered Mental Health First Aid, along with newly developed two-hour, half-day and full-day workshops.

Patternmakers’ Audiences 2023+
Patternmakers has released the top trends shaping Australian audiences in 2023 and beyond. They have found that email marketing is the priority for 55+, while word-of-mouth and socials are key for under 35s.

PAC Australia 2024
PAC have announced two dates. They will be hosting the Perth 2024 ISPA Congress from 30 April–3 May, and their national performing arts market conference APAX 2024 in Melbourne from 19–23 August.

4 Oct – Lucy Guerin Inc’s Secondment Program EOIs
Secondment for a Dancer or a Choreographer/Dramaturg/Director to experience a new LGI work in creation, and the choreographic process currently in development by Lucy Guerin.

5 Oct – Bank of Melbourne x Collingwood Yards Residency
Year-long rent-free residency awarded annually to an individual or micro collective, alongside mentoring and professional development.

7 Oct – Actors Wanted Theatre Works
A circus artist or parkourist, identifying as female aged 21–35 in a non-speaking role, and an actor aged 22–35 identifying as male for the role of “the boyfriend” for ‘DICKENS STREET– THE OTHER’ season 2024. For more information email Ieva at ievaniedre@gmail.com.

9 Oct – Directing, Writing and Dramaturgy for the Contemporary Theatre: A Conversation
Free panel discussion hosted by VCA, with special guests Van Badham and Roshelle Fong on writing and directing for theatre within Melbourne and internationally.

17 Oct – Creative Victoria’s Making Space Program
$50,000–$100,000 available for Victorian orgs and collectives that are Deaf and Disability led, or show a commitment to disability leadership, to improve accessibility in creative workspaces and venues. Physical refurbishments, sensory access upgrades, and digital infrastructure can be funded.

23 Oct – Gertrude Studios 2024
Two-year studio program, with subsidised artist studios and exhibition outcomes. Includes, but not limited to, dance and performance artists. A fully subsidised studio is available for a First Peoples artist.

23 Oct – Lesley Hall Arts and Disability Scholarship 2023
$5,000 grant for a Deaf or Disabled artist, arts workers and creative living in Victoria who uses their creative practice to advocate for Deaf and Disabled people.

3 Nov – Melbourne Theatre Company MinterEllison Future Directors Initiative 2024
Paid placements for Melbourne-based assistant directors to work alongside senior theatre directors on a Melbourne Theatre Company production in 2024. There are identified positions for culturally diverse emerging directors.

12 Nov – La Mama’s Festival of Mother Tongues
La Mama is seeking interest from theatre groups or solo theatre makers from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds who wish to present original plays in their native language, for their first multilingual theatre festival in November 2024. Each production will receive a budget to present the show and the creative team will take 80% of the box office takings.

Sick Pay Guarantee for Casual and Contract Workers
The Victorian Sick Pay Guarantee now offers sick and carer’s pay to more casual, contract and self-employed workers in the creative industries. Eligible roles include actors, writers, dancers, make-up artists, sound and lighting technicians, camera operators, and more. Check your eligibility now.

ASSITEJ STUFF Youth Arts & Young Audiences

13 Oct – ASSITEJ World Congress Conference Papers Havana 2024 
The International Theatre for Young Audiences Research Network (ITYARN) is calling for proposals, their conference will take place during ASSITEJ’s World Congress at Havana on 24 May–1 June 2024. The festival’s theme is ‘Voices of a New World’. Researchers should submit a 500-word proposal, sample bibliography, and 150-word biography.

16 Oct – EOIs for The Blue Room Theatre’s Young Makers Program (WA)
10 young people aged 15–18 will get to immerse themselves in The Blue Room Theatre’s Summer Nights Festival by seeing various performances and engaging in workshops to develop their own ideas.

31 Oct – Pony Cam Artist Callout EOIs (VIC)
Pony Cam is seeking artists aged 15–22 in Geelong who are interested in taking part in their performance work ‘Paradise Lots’ in 2024. There will be an introductory workshop at Platform Arts on 4 Nov.  

CIRCUS AND PHYSICAL THEATRE (CAPT) STUFF

19–20 Oct – Australian Circus Summit (VIC)
NICA’s two-day global conference on the moving state of circus. The program is out, which includes  presenter pitches from venues and festivals, and an opening keynote delivered by Darcy Grant, Artistic Director of Gravity & Other Myths. Tiered tickets from $154.

23 Oct – APAM x Honey Pot: Leaps and Bounds EOIs
Leaps and Bounds will be a special platform event for Australian CaPT artists at Adelaide Fringe’s Honey Pot, taking place 27–28 February 2024. EOIs are open for artists and companies to take part in the Pitch Program. Selected pitches will be seen by Leaps and Bounds delegates, national and international presenters and programmers, artists and producers. There is an online briefing session on 4 Oct.

Women’s Circus Space Connect Program EOIs (VIC)
Offering free rehearsal space for circus companies and professionals. Artists are able to request financial support to enable them to fully engage, for example support to access childcare, interpreters, and more. It can be exclusive use, or shared, and for the main training space, and/or the front community room.

  • Allie Stapleton has taken on the role of General Manager at Footscray Community Arts, while Asha Bee Abraham assumes the position of Artistic Program Manager.
  • Dark Mofo has announced that it will ‘pause in 2024 for a period of renewal’.
  • Margie Breen has stepped down as Director of Theatre Network NSW. Board member Pippa Bailey has assumed the caretaking role.
  • Fiona Sweet has been appointed the new CEO of the Stella Prize.
  • Next Wave has appointed four young artists and community organisers Matisse LaidaLydia TesemaAnthony Bandalan, and MaggZ to shape their programming in 2024 as part of A Rising Tide.
  • Australian Dance Theatre has appointed Ghenoa Gela as their first Artist in Residence for GROUNDswell.
  • Mark Salvestro has been appointed Marketing and Administration Manager at Arts on Tour.
  • Cameron Lukey has been appointed the new Artistic Director of fortyfivedownstairs’ theatre. Co-founder Mary Lou Jelbart AM has stepped down in the role.
