TNA News and Opportunities

CIPI Salon Series underway
The first session ‘Intro to arts marketplaces’ in Feb focussed on supporting producers with applications to Showcase Victoria, while also providing space for questions and conversation around the role of arts marketplaces more broadly. The Salon Series will continue to be curated in consultation with the sector so if there is an area or topic you think would be particularly useful, please get in touch. TNA Announces APAF Dates and Curator 
APAF (formerly Australian Theatre Forum, ATF) will take place 13-15 September 2023 in Brisbane in association with Brisbane Festival and Brisbane Powerhouse with Sanja Simić as Curator.  APAF is a national gathering for practitioners in theatre, circus, dance, hybrid and interdisciplinary work, and the first day of the forum will include a half-day dedicated stream of Circus & Physical Theatre programming. Save the dates! Registrations will open mid year. 

Travel/Accommodation Support for Indies to Attend APAF  
TNA will once again invite indies to apply for a subsidised place at APAF ($121). We will also help you seek support from your state for travel/accom. Here are the opportunities we already know aboutTasmanians can apply to TNA by Friday 10 March to get a subsidised spot so you can then apply to Arts Tas’ ArtsBridge by 27 March. EOIs for indies in other states/territory will open in the coming weeks. 

Victorian Circus Rigging Qualification Upgrade – Update and key dates. 
Through TNA’s Safe and Sustainable Rigging Initiative, TNA is offering to cover the cost of rigging ticket upgrades for up to 15 people from the circus community. Focusing on established, experienced and diverse circus riggers, the program aims to increase qualification, knowledge and capacity within the circus sector.  

Key dates:  
15 March 2023 – EOIs for Rigging Ticket Upgrades Open 
14 April 2023 – EOIs for Rigging Ticket Upgrades Close at 11:59pm   AEST
May 2023– Successful applicants announced

Victoria

12 March – Gasworks’ Circus Showcase 
Seeking artists and collectives to present 10–15-minute acts, with shortlisted acts to perform for one night. Artists receive rehearsal space and technical support. Preference will be given to work that has not had a ticketed season in Melbourne. 

6-10 April – Gravity Dolls Aerial AF  
The Aerial AF is back and better than ever for its annual celebration of all things aerial. April 6 for the Aerial AF Cabaret : April 6th and Festival weekend April 7-10 for the Festival Weekend with two sought after international trainers. You can book individual days. Full, Single and Multi- Day Passes are available, intensives will also be available as part of the festival. 

13 -17 April – Spin Circus Festival  
This annual three-day festival caters to all skill levels, previous years have featured workshops in acrobatics, aerials, handstands, roue cyr, acroyoga, levi wand, teeterboard, fire spinning, poi, staff, hat juggling, slackline, hoops, dance, juggling, magic, industry discussions, German wheel, Chinese pole, lyra, tissu, trapeze and whip cracking.  

18 – 23 April – Australian Partner Acrobatics Convention (APAC) 
APAC is an annual training convention for all skill levels. The convention runs for 4 days with coaches of various partnered disciplines such as; Acro-yoga, cheer stunting, circus, sports acrobatics and dance acrobatics.  


National

13 March – NICA x Fringe Commission  
$20,000 commission open to independent circus artists across AU to present a brand-new work at NICA during this year’s Melbourne Fringe Festival. 

3 April – NICA x Fringe Circus Hub 
NICA will become a Circus Hub during Melbourne Fringe, meaning it will also support independent artists and small to medium companies to present works in their venue. Fixed venue hire costs are waived in favour of a 60% box office split. As part of the Circus Hub NICA will also host a two day conference facilitating networking for artists, producers, presenters and associated workers in circus and physical theatre, details will be announced soon. 

16 April – Flying Fruit Fly Circus’ Under Construction Residencies 
Circus artists across AU receive $3,000 and in-kind support, free accommodation and 2-weeks access to rehearsal space to develop and perform new work. Victorian artists receive additional $5,000, and the opportunity to be considered for a $20,000 commission. 

18-23 April – Canberra Circus Festival & Training Camp update 
The youth training camp has SOLD OUT! But there are still a handful of spaces available in the Trainer Training Program which features: 4 x 2-hour theory workshops, plus practical trainer training skills sessions delivered by master trainers, including guest trainers from our good friends at NICA! TNA is offering a bursary to support a trainer who is facing significant barriers of access & equity.

21-24 April – Adelaide Juggling Convention
Adelaide Juggling Convention is a 4 day long weekend of workshops, games and shows around learn and sharing new skills in juggling, spinning and fun! 4 day AJC ticket including all shows and workshops is $160. 

Brisbane Circus Centre is now up and running with Flipside Circus hosting their launch event on 24 February followed by number of upcoming events to celebrate their move, including From Little Things… which opened on 2 March. 


International

9 March – Canada : International Market of Contemporary Circus
Free online workshop/info session for those looking to submit a pitch at International Market of Contemporary Circus (MICC) in 2023. 
Note this will be March 9th in Australia so adjust to your time zone when booking. 

15 March – Bogotá : Call for paper and panel presentations
The fourth Circus and its Others conference will be held Feb. 28 – Mar. 3, 2024 in partnership with the National Center for the Arts Teatro Colón in Bogotá. The call for paper and panel presentations is now open.
