Directors in TYA: An International Exchange, also known globally as the “International Directors’ Seminar”, occurs biennially. The next Directors in TYA Exchange will take place 23-30 May 2027 at COMEDIA Theatre in Cologne, Germany.

TNA, as the Australian national centre for ASSITEJ, will select one director to attend through an EOI process. The program is open to directors working in the Theatre for Young Audiences sector. It is open to all genres and sub-sectors within performing arts for young audiences. TNA welcomes EOIs from both independent directors and directors employed by organisations.

Around 25 directors from all over the world will travel to Cologne for the exchange. You can see a list of all previous participants, including Australians who have attended since 1984. Last year’s Australian delegate Luke Kerridge has shared his reflections here.

The working language of the seminar is English.

ASSITEJ Germany and COMEDIA Theatre Cologne will cover accommodation, catering, cultural events and leisure activities. Participants are expected to cover the costs for their travel. TNA can provide assistance and letters of support for you to secure funding for this opportunity.

Applicants will be informed of TNA’s selection by Friday, 31 July 2026. The successful applicant, with TNA’s recommendation, will submit an application form to ASSITEJ Germany by Tuesday, 1 September 2026.

The 2027 theme: ‘Creating Common Spaces’

The 2027 Exchange focuses on common spaces and community-based work in the arts.

Common spaces are places of gathering and togetherness. Places that serve exchange, benefit diverse groups, and are open to all. They are spaces that belong to those who shape them and are shaped by those who inhabit them. 

How can a theatre be a place of encounter? And how is it shaped by, with and for young people?
